My second painting of the newly revealed cliff face called Dogface by the locals. There was a massive landslide in 1931 that left this striking yellow sandstone cliff face.

From the Boar’s Head, 76cm x 61cm, acrylic on canvas, framed, 2023

This rock seemed to me like a compact world with its own flora and fauna. It overlooks the Kanimbla valley and, from the side, resembles a boar’s head. It is a landmark, one of many, in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney.

Megalong to Medlow, 30cm x 37cm, acrylic on board, framed, 2023

This plein air work came together very easily after months of studio painting of larger paintings. It was made by the roadside in the Megalong Valley and the cliff faces in the middle ground are those of Medlow Bath, just along from the famous Hydro Majestic which is indicated by a few brush marks on the right side. The cliffs were fanning out in the mid afternoon sunshine in early Autumn.

The title of this cliff face dates back to a time before an early morning in January 1931 when when a great section of the escarpment face that gave it it’s name, cleaved off and fell into the valley. This rockface is regarded as a dangerous challenge for some very experienced climbers. In this painting I was trying to show just how stark, shocking and colourful this rock face is as it sits amidst the ancient cliffs just north of Katoomba.
