I was painting this little plein air work on a rock shelf as the light was dying behind me and I had a strong feeling that I wanted my acrylic abstract underpainting to come forward and sit on the picture plane and play a greater role in how the work was read. It didn’t really fit with the rest of my work at the time but it sat in my studio and intrigued me for around two years. Now, in the final months of 2017 its how I work.
We spent two sunny days painting near Charlotte Pass in the Spring thaw. I’ll never forget the beauty of that place
John allowed us artists to go down to his beautiful property on the Snowy River in NSW Monaro district for a week. This plein air work showing the late afternoon light on the riverbank was made over three afternoons when the light was golden and the shadows were long and blue.
