John allowed us artists to go down to his beautiful property on the Snowy River in NSW Monaro district for a week. This plein air work showing the late afternoon light on the riverbank was made over three afternoons when the light was golden and the shadows were long and blue.

There is a violence to be found in the twisted broken trunks of these old trees

After a day of plein air painting at Berry’s Island on Sydney Harbour the very last rays of the setting sun lit the Angophoras in a deep vivid red. I took some photographs and painted this in my studio while listening to Spanish musicians playing Samba music.
